Permit Required to Wash Your Boat
PASADENA, MD - On Tuesday, March 4th, at the monthly board meeting, the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen's Association, Inc. (MSSA) agreed to a resolution supporting H.R. 2550/S.B. 2067 which will reinstate a long standing EPA exemption for recreational vessels regarding deck runoff and other non-pollutant discharge. If this legislation is not passed you will need to purchase a permit just to wash your boat. The exemption would include any deck runoff from a recreational vessel, any engine cooling water, gray water, bilge water, laundry, shower, and galley sink wastes, or any other discharge incidental to the normal operation of a recreational vessel. This exemption does not apply to trash, garbage, or any other such materials discharged overboard by a recreational vessel, whereas these are already monitored very closely. For the past 34 years the EPA has recognized that everyday runoff, bilge water, gray water, and engine cooling water were not the same as a commercial vessel discharging millions of gallons of foreign bilge water into U.S. waters. Therefore having two separate thresholds in determining permit requirements were needed. Simply put this is not an issue where a "one size fits all" approach will work. This is a time for Congress to remember why they delegate power to agencies and recognize EPA's expertise in this issue and realize the EPA exempted recreational boaters for a reason. We encourage all our members to contact their Congressman or Representative on this matter.

Offseason Check List
We all are in the process of fixing tackle, making new rigs, checking the line on reels etc. Don't forget to check on the things you hope to never use , your safety equipment. Check the dates on your flares, is the fire extinguisher charged, what about the 1st Aid Kit. Does anything need to be replaced from the prior year or any new medicines added. Make a list and purchase it on your next trip to Boaters World and get 10% off.

Trailer Prep
It's that time of year again and spring is around the corner. The best time to do your bearings and brakes is in the fall before the freeze. But if you put it off, take some time to do some trailer maintenance. It only makes sense as your trailer boat will spend more time on a trailer than the water. I change my brake fluid every year as it attracts water and is also easy to do. Use a suction gun or turkey baster to suck it out of the master cylinder, then refill and bleed the brakes to remove the old in the lines. Refill master cylinder again. Check the tire pressure and wear, rotate or replace worn out tires. Check you lights and connections - use dialectic grease on connections and the bulbs. Better to spend time now than along side the road where you do not have everything you need.
