MSSA on Tidalfish.com
MSSA now has it's own private bulletin board on Tidalfish.com. It was established so MSSA members would have a private forum to interact with each other. The board is wide open for discussion about any subject. Only existing members are eligible for a password. You may private message "fishingfrank" or e-mail Frank Holden or Stephen Shechtel to get the password. For those of you who aren't familiar with Tidalfish.com, it's a popular chat-room style website where you have the opportunity to discuss fishing with other subscribers. There are several different boards that specialize in several different area of fishing interest. You'll find a wealth of fishing information on the site. Basic Tidalfish.com is free and registration is quick and easy for anyone with Internet access. .

STRIPED BASS REGULATIONS
CHANGES IN THE WIND

On December 18, 2006, Stephen Shechtel attended at DNR a joint meeting of DNR's Sportfish Advisory Commission (SFAC) and the Tidal Fisheries Advisory Commission (TFAC) and the Striped Bass Ad Hoc Advisory Committee. The purpose of the meeting will be to review information from previous striped bass seasons, and discuss the 2007 Maryland striped bass fishery. The Committee approved a resolution to have ASMFC remove the quota (limit) for Maryland on migratory striped bass. Not under consideration for modification is the limit of 1 trophy fish per person per boat. For future consideration maybe: raising the minimum size, limit or eliminate the use of planer boards, or a limitation on the number of trips a Charter Boat can take per day. For up to the minute updates see: dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/ One issue was loud and clear: the information being used by NOAA to estimate the number of fish being removed from the Bay by Maryland is nothing short of a guess. Their models are a joke. Charter Boats must keep a log of all landings. Those log books are turned in to DNR who in turn uses the information to rebut NOAA. The unknown is recreational anglers. As of now, DNR's dockside survey and your participation in the voluntary Striped Bass report are the only "actual" data available. I approached the Committee to lobby DNR to require recreational anglers to keep a log similar to Charter Boats. Only then will Md have the data necessary to rebut NOAA, eliminate the quota, and allow us our fair share of this fishery.

15.5" & 4 fish on the Coast
15.0" & 2 fish in Chesapeake Bay

MD - Rockfish Survey:
Everyone make sure to record your data & submit it online to the
Cooperative Striped Bass Survey.

Why participate in the cooperative striped bass survey? This data will help us keep our allocation and provide accurate data on our catch. Otherwise we will be subject to what the scientists indicate. Please take the time to fill this out as I'm sure many of you fished on opening day. We will also try to have the hard copy survey at the meeting. For more info go to the Maryland DNR Fisheries web site.

It is in everyone's best interests to provide accurate data on Rockfish landings so that we are not shortchanged (again) when creel limits are being set. Please obtain a copy of the survey form and send information on all landings to MSSA/DNR.

MSSA HQ notes that by now most Maryland recreational anglers know that the minimum size for the 2006 spring trophy rockfish season, which opens on April 15th, is 33 inches, up from last year's limit of 28 inches. Fishermen may have also read that no fishing tournaments (except catch & release) are permitted until May 1st, which is why MSSA's 23rd Annual Spring Rockfish Tournament will be held May 5-7. The regulation changes stem from a ruling this winter by the federal Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) that requires Maryland to adjust its recreational trophy season to compensate for overages that occurred from 2003 to 2005.
