October
North Carolina Fishing Trip
Breaking News on the October Trip. We are changing locations from Atlantic Beach, NC to Hatteras, NC. The dates will be the same Oct 7-14th.
The new place will have reasonable accommodations either $59/night or $74/night and that includes a boat slip. It has a covered fish cleaning area, restaurant on site and a seafood packaging house that will commercially vacuum bag and freeze your catch. The king fishing is excellent
and close to shore like Atlantic Beach with the added benefit of the gulf stream only 20 miles out that has some of the best wahoo fishing around. Also the inshore fishing is fantastic. The inlet is easy to navigate and well marked.
This should be a great trip so make plans now as we will be taking reservations in April and May. We ill have more information and a presentation at the May meeting. First timers don't worry as it will be your best time to go offshore with a bunch of buddy boats to show you the
ropes. Any questions call John Travers (Crabby) at 301-370-7733 or
Bud Wildman at 240-372-7491.

Chincoteague Island, VA
Fishing Report by Charlie Koski
What can I say other then July and August has been a piscatorial delight. In shore the flounder bite turned on around the July 21 and lasted until we had a bad blow the third week of August. My charter customers pulled 125 keepers out of
over 300 fish they caught. Most flatties were between 18"-23" and we pulled a few 24"-25" fish also!!! We had a lot of fish that were just under the legal size limit. Hopefully there should be plenty around for the fall run. Flounder have been biting good
at the offshore wrecks also! Speaking of the wrecks Spadefish and Triggerfish abound out there too, use small hooks and clams for these small mouthed fish.
C-bass are starting to show up in more numbers and the bigger fish will be here in September and October Tautog will be on the wrecks also, more so in October and November!!! Stripers run right off the beach here at the end of September on there migration south and trolling the
same rigs used in the Chesapeake will work out here as well!!! Beside the flounder we have had an off and on bite on the Croaker in the back bays and they are running again here at the end of August. Not little ones either Most of the croaker unfortunately ended up in one of
the 6 Gillnetters boats that sucked them up in the inlet and main channel. One day I counted 15 nets out there, that was ok because I was hooking up on the flatties!!!
Offshore the Yellowfin bite as been off and on and Dolphin are a bonus!!! Yellowfin are more leader shy so go down to a 30-40 lb size for these finicky delights. Bluefin are pretty much non-existent. I have also heard of Blue Marlin and White Marlin at the lumps and out further,
some of them have even been caught on the chunk. And don't forget there are Wahoo and Cobia lingering out there also.

Not sure if you all have been reading in The Fisherman and articles sent out by the RFA (Recreational Fishing Alliance) but the next two-three years flounder fishery in trouble. Proposals are on the table and being looked at to pose a 18" size limit and only two fish per
person in VA!!!! Only you and your friends can stop this from happening. Matt Abell owner of Seahawk Sports Center in Pocomoke and I had a lengthy discussion on this today and we agreed to try and reach as many people we can to send letters to the two people who are on the committee
to change the rulings, Jim Saxton and Wayne Gilchrest. You can print these letter by going to: www.seahawksports.com

Fishing Regulations:
Maryland - Flounder
15.5" & 4 fish on the Coast
15.0" & 2 fish in Chesapeake Bay
Virginia - Flounder
16.5" & 6 fish.
MD - Rockfish Survey:
Everyone make sure to record your data & submit it online to the
Cooperative Striped Bass Survey.
Why participate in the cooperative striped bass survey? This data will help us keep our allocation and provide accurate data on our catch. Otherwise we will be subject to what the scientists indicate. Please
take the time to fill this out as I'm sure many of you fished on opening day. We will also try to have the hard copy survey at the meeting. For more info go to the Maryland DNR Fisheries web site.
It is in everyone's best interests to provide accurate data on Rockfish landings so that we are not shortchanged (again) when creel limits are being set. Please obtain a copy of the survey form and send information on all landings to MSSA/DNR.
MSSA HQ notes that by now most Maryland recreational anglers know that the minimum size for the 2006 spring trophy rockfish season, which opens on April 15th, is 33 inches, up from last year's limit of 28 inches. Fishermen may have also read that no fishing tournaments (except
catch & release) are permitted until May 1st, which is why MSSA's 23rd Annual Spring Rockfish Tournament will be held May 5-7. The regulation changes stem from a ruling this winter by the federal Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) that requires Maryland to
adjust its recreational trophy season to compensate for overages that occurred from 2003 to 2005.
