Report from Bill's Fishing
Shack
By Bill Johnson

On the morning of Thursday, Nov. 18, I picked up a neighbor, Gary Hennick, to test the waters for the larger fall stripers. He had wanted to go with me for some time to get some pointers for setting up his own boat. It was a warm cloudy day with no wind. It wasn't long before one of the rods tipped. Gary dragged a defiant 38 ½" striper into the boat. About an hour later another rod went down. It took little effort to get the fish alongside the boat. As I leadered the fish into the net, the fish suddenly realized he was hooked. Gary did an excellent job of getting the now feisty 44" fish into the net. Having put some smaller baits on, I now tried for some slot fish, but within an hour we only managed to catch and release two more in the mid-30" range. Excited over the biggest striper he'd ever landed, he was anxious to get home to take pictures. After a phone call that night, Ralph Cope joined me the following morning, and by 8:30 that morning we had caught four stripers, the largest being 46". It is definitely not the fishery we had in the spring, but if you rely on your most productive baits and find and continue to work the areas with the larger bait and fish, then you can produce some nice fish like the 52 ½" Captain Sonny Forest on the Fin Finder picked up.

Bottom fishing in the Patuxent is producing large numbers of the finest perch in years, according to a number of the captains. I've heard of some people even using night crawlers to catch them. Hope to see you on the water working on some of these fine fish.

For the latest fishing reports, you can reach me at the Fishin’ Shack, 410-326-1891.
