Membership News
By Ken Wheeler
Welcome new members to the Frederick Chapter.
The MSSA is looking to improve communications & public relations in 2005, which will lead to increased membership & overall exposure of our organization. A membership committee is being formed to accomplish this objective through such
means as advertising at sports shows & press releases in local publications. Also of interest is developing "on-line" membership application & tournament entry. The committee is in need of volunteers to assist with this mission by developing news releases, brochures,
ads as well as developing the website for "online" ordering. The next meeting of the MSSA membership committee is Sep 29, 7pm at the MSSA headquarters. Please contact Ken Wheeler or any chapter officer if you would like to participate with the membership committee.
Please welcome new member Buster Richards to the Frederick Chapter.
If you have a family membership, you can obtain membership cards for your included family by listing their names in the space provided on the application/renewal form. Please note that the family membership only covers children to the age of 16.
Please check beside your name on the member roster each meeting. Check your renewal dates. Some MSSA tournaments require the Captain to be a MSSA member. This attendance information is useful for planning future meetings and activities. Please update your demographic information
and email addresses.
Attendance at the September meeting was approximately 60 members.

Report from Bill's Fishing
Shack By Bill Johnson
You wouldn't have believed that the remnants of hurricane Ivan were racing to Maryland on the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 16. After being apart from my boat and fishing for a period of time, the flat waters of the Bay were too hard to resist. Having
only minnows and artificial lures for bait, I headed out around 2:00 in the afternoon. I first tried for flounder and picked up a number of sub-legal sized and one keeper around 17". There seemed to be a lot of bait and birds working over the water, so I tried my luck with
jigging Gotcha plugs. That produced small rockfish and bluefish up to 2 pounds. On my way back to my boat slip, I spotted a school of breaking fish in 30 feet of water. Jigging under them produced more 2-pound bluefish, a rockfish of 17 ½" and a small 14" trout.
There was no cooler full of fish, but I did have dinner and the good feeling of fish bending the rod. I've heard that bottom fishing is off and on with one day legal flounder and the same location producing nothing the next day. Large spot and some hardhead are still being caught
in the mouth of the river. Again, you must find the location of the fish and wait for them to feed. Chumming for rockfish seems to be off and on also, with some days producing more blues than rock. I've heard of a few Spanish mackerel still mixed in with some breaking bluefish.
At the time of this writing, hurricane Ivan's aftermath has churned up the Bay for the last three days. I'm hoping to venture out and test the waters again by mid-week.
