Near Sinking at Lumpy Bottom by Charlie Koski

Exceptional seamanship on behalf of Steve Shechtel & Ray Twilford aided one of our members when his boat nearly sank at Lumpy Bottom on Saturday, August 7, 2004.
Paul Spalding & his crew of two on the vessel Fishaholic ventured out that Saturday & although conditions were rougher than they thought, they had Tuna Fever & continued on to Lumpy Bottom in PG's 23' Sea Ox. After arriving at Lumpy, they anchored & when the anchor grabbed, it swung the boat into a position which caused the rough seas to pour into the back of the boat filling it with water faster than the bilge pump could handle. When PG assessed the situation & found he was going down, he issued a May Day call on the VHF channel 68. At this point, Captain Steve Schectel on the Reel Love & Captain Ray Twiford on the October Moon came off their anchor & went to aid the sinking vessel. PG was bailing frightfully while his crew ran the boat trying to get it on plane so they could pull the plug to help drain the excessive amount of water from the bilge. All the while Captain Steve with his 36' Tiara sportfish was smoothing the water in front of the suffering vessel & Captain Ray was blocking the waves with his 42' vessel the October Moon. Captain Ray followed PG for five miles while PG was getting the water out of his vessel at which time PG said he would be ok. Captain Steve Shechtel continued to smooth the water for PG all the way back to the Chincoteague Inlet. Both of these captains were on fish at the time but helping a fellow boater in a time of need was their main concern & their aid saved the lives of three very frightened boaters & friends on that rough Saturday in August. Captain Steve Shechtel reports "it was not just me who was involved, but my entire crew who made our quick response possible: Craig Abshire, Mike Beans, John Savinsky & Wayne Smith. Without their excellent seamanship skills in retrieving the anchor & tending the lines, we could not have assisted as we did. However, I believe that we did nothing special... we did what Dave Griffin, and the entire crew of Cat Attack did for Crabby, myself, and ET at Atlantic Beach two years ago, came to the aid of a boater in distress. We did only what we know PG would have done for us, and anyone else in the club, had the situation been reversed. Everyone was grateful that PG and his crew returned to port safely. The Chapter Membership has displayed the highest degree of fellowship over the years, without hesitation, by coming to the aid of a member without hesitation or remuneration."
