Welcome new members to

that time approaching again, please check your membership
renewal. I am available during meetings for renewals and
new memberships. If you are interested in helping at the
MSSA display during any of the shows, contact any chapter
officer. The MSSA display is a great way to share with
others what the organization has meant to you.

Report
from Bill's Fishing
Shack By Bill Johnson
Due to family matters
the last month has had me tied up in the Frederick area
and have been unable to test the waters for myself. But
according to some of my most reliable sources, including
Captain Bruno Vasta on the Dottie Vee and Brian Stuart
on the Flora Vee, the bottom fishing has continued to
improve since the end of May. The bite for croaker and
favorable sized spot in the mouth of the Patuxent River
continues, with the best bite being late evening to after
dark. There has been some nice flounder caught in the
mouth of the Patuxent, one of the spots being the three-legged
buoy. There's also legal sized rockfish being caught on
trolled medium sized bucktails and spoons on the channel
edges in 35-50 feet of water, although most captains are
chumming for them in the usual grounds, Point No Point,
72, etc. Have heard some reports of schools of small rockfish
working the surface, providing action on light rods and
fly fishing gear, but have no reports of bluefish showing
up. There are reports of large numbers of cow nosed rays
in the Bay and Patuxent River. When they move in, then
the bottom fishing for spot, croaker, etc. usually turns
off. If you by chance hook up on one of these winged monsters,
you might be pleasantly surprised by how good they can
be in a deep fryer. Beware of the barb at the base of
the tail, which can leave a nasty and painful puncture
wound. I cut the wings off until I get home where I can
separate the meat from the cartilage and skin. Then cut
it in strips to be battered and deep fried. You might
find that it's worth the effort. Hope to be getting my
lines wet after the 7th of July and trying some night
fishing. Call me at 410-326-1891 for the latest fishing
reports and about the night fishing trip on July 24-25.
