Report from Bill's Fishing
Shack By Bill Johnson
In a few short weeks the striped bass season opens! For me, it's time to turn my attention from the fishing gear to the boat. Reports of a few nice stripers being caught at the Calvert Cliffs power plant have pressed home the urgency of the amount
of work to be done before I launch my boat. I have also had reports from Virginia about the rockfish staging in the mouth of the Bay for their spawning run. When talking to Captain Bruno Vasta recently, he informed me of the ospreys returning to their nests on his creek, which
means the bait is now showing up in the Bay and the rockfish should soon follow. Although I expect the rockfish to come on strong early, I don't expect it to last beyond a couple of weeks like it did last spring. I also expect a better bottom fishing season through this summer
over last year's poor showing. I've gotten reports of yellow perch being caught at Hill's Bridge and white perch in the Patuxent River and its tributaries. I've even received a rumor of an occasional hardhead caught in the southern reaches of the Bay.
By the April meeting I should be working out of my Cove Point location..
