by Maureen (Mo) Appleby

Grilled Salmon Steaks with Vodka and Orange Juice

4 salmon steaks, 1" thick
½ cup vodca
¼ cup fresh orange juice
Juice of one lemon
2 tbsp. Coarse-grained mustard
¼ cup chopped fresh dill

Wash & dry steaks. Arrange in one layer in a glass dish. Puncture the outer edges of the steaks with a fork on both sides so they can absorb the marinade.

Combine remaining ingredients. Pour over fish. Coat both sides. Marinate 20 minutes.

Grill steaks over high heat basting frequently. Serve.

Report from Bill's Fishing
Shack
By Bill Johnson

On the weekend of February 6-8, five couples from the Frederick Chapter MSSA enjoyed a retreat at the Princess Royale Hotel in Ocean City. The hospitality room opened early Friday evening with plenty of food & drink. Saturday morning started off with a continental breakfast before the Annual Meeting, at which time the wives enjoyed the outlet shops in Delaware. Howard King from the Department of Natural Resources spoke about rate hikes on boater registration fees, saltwater angler fees, a $50 surcharge on boat slips, & possible filter fees, with the money going into Maryland's general fund. We enjoyed fun, food & dancing at the party Saturday night. Mo contributed to the scholarship fund by being the high bidder for a brass dolphin sculpture. The sports shows & flea markets in the wintertime provide a break from cabin fever & an opportunity to get some good buys on favorite baits and tackle. I prefer to stick with the basic white, chartreuse & yellow colors, although you can find any color in the rainbow, some of which I feel puts more money in the merchants' pockets than fish in the boat. I have spent evenings cleaning & oiling my rods & reels with a light coat of DW40 in preparation of the spring opening. I also clean and touch-up paint my favorite baits, ruby lipped parachutes, in hopes that they can produce the same quality fish for another season. Hopefully all that will remain the week before the season opens is to put leaders on the baits & the rods in the boat. If you still need some baits, there are still a few flea markets like the one in the Solomons to attend. There will be several of us planning a trip in that direction on those weekends.

For the latest fishing reports, you can reach me at the Fishin’ Shack, 410-326-1891.
