Chincoteague Island, VA
Fishing Report
by Charlie Koski

The flounder regs. are out & ASMFC has approved these 3 options for VA. These will go to final vote on 3/24/04 in Newport News, VA.

17-1/2", 8 fish, no closure

17", 5-8 fish, no closure (Ernie, ASFMC REP wasn't sure about bag)

16-1/2", 4-5 fish, 1 week closure during pony penning (not sure of bag or dates)

If you want to voice your opinions or support of the smaller size limits, which the statistics support, for the seaside please email to or call 757-247-2200 or post your comments on the website www.mrc.state.va.us by March 20th. Please help us support the smaller size limits so the tackle shops & charter businesses can stay in business here on Chincoteague & in Wachapreague. Flounder fishing is our livelyhood. This captain is readying his boat, painting, fixing wiring, installing new gadgets, re-spooling reels, etc. as most of us do this time of year to prepare for the start of the season. I am also looking forward to seeing my friends of the Frederick MSSA & other chapters who visit the island.

The 2004 Chapter Flounder Tournament will take place this year on April 23, 24 and 25th, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Chincoteague, Virginia. Entry fee is $40 per boat and closing date is April 14th, 2004. This year will be a three day event allowing the total weight of up to six 6 fish only. At this writing the Va. Flounder Regulations have not been determined. Those interested may obtain an entry form at one of the meetings.
Again this year Capt. Bob's Marina will host our tournament & Donna has reduced her slip fee & ramp fee for the event. She also graciously donates prizes for the tournament. Sea Hawk Motel on Maddox Blvd., Chincoteague will be the chapter motel & has offered reduced room rates & also donates a cash prize for the tournament.
On Saturday April 24 at 7 pm for those that are interested we have arranged an evening of fellowship at THE VILLAGE RESTAURANT located on Maddox Blvd. A fee of $5 will be collected for each person interested along with the entry form & fees & will be returned to those that attend the evening of the dinner. We need to advise the restaurant of a number that are planning to attend. Any questions contact Rick Etzler, Mike Bean or Pete Castle.

Crabby's Winter Fishin' Fever
Crabby, Jim Stephens, Marty Russell, Ed, PG and Rick Thompson fished off Islamorada Key in Florida for sailfish 2/9 - 2/23. The weather was gorgous, 82 - 86 degrees every day with only one rainy day. They fished off the Key approximately 5 to 6 miles out. First thing in the morning they caught ballyhoo with hook, line and net, catching 3 dozen. While fishing for bait fish they also caught yellow tail and bluerunners. While reeling in a bluerunner a 25# grouper hit the bluerunner cutting it in half just like a shark. The water is so clear down there one could see at least 50' down. With 3 dozen bait fish in the live well they proceeded to the edge of the reef in 120-150' of water to slow troll with the live ballyhoo. The catch was impressive: 10 sailfish, the biggest approx. 80# with some double hitters; 6-8 barracuddas 25-30#; 1 shark about 3' long. They had one ruff day with 6' seas and had 7 hits and landed 3 sailfish. Sailfish bite better in rough water.

If interested in tuna at Oregon Inlet in late March, call Crabby for details at 301-253-9806
