Offshore Fishing

It's been slow but the weather was great for the MSSA Offshore Tournament August 15-17. It was flat calm, not even a swell on Friday. Saturday was also a great day. Members of the Frederick chapter picked up small dolphin & yellow fin tuna & even a white marlin. No one was in the money in the main tournament but we had a great time even though the fishing was slow as it's been all year.
Chincoteague Island, VA
Fishing Report
by Charlie Koski

Fishing on the island has been hanging on due to influx of Atlantic Croaker in the inland bays. One can catch them just about anywhere you go up to 3#. Larger pinheads moved in the past few weeks & really make light tackle scream the drag. There're a few flounder being caught in between the Croakers but are mostly shorts. Trout can still be caught around Queen Sound Bridge at night when the tide is running, using peeler crab for bait. We're hoping the flounder will move out of the back bays in Sept Oct. on their way to the wintering grounds offshore. Puppy drum should appear in the surf anytime now. The stripers have been seen in the main channel. We've also been catching Pigfish & small sea bass. The Tuna bite improved over the past week with reports of Bluefin & Yellowfin being caught at Lumpy Bottom, Parking Lot, 30 & 50 Fathom lines. Not in numbers like last year but they are catching. Dolphin are being caught around the sea bass pots in numbers. Now is the time to target them. Most boats are catching their limits of these acrobatic fish. I also heard that while fishing for tuna some people have been dropping squid & catching nice sea bass at the Parking lot, bit this Sea Bass close from Sept 1 to Sept 15. The wrecks offshore hold plenty of these finetasting morsels.
