Frederick Chapter
2003 Yearbook
Rick Etzler has designed the 2003 Yearbook. One must complete a Chapter Fishing Album Form , attach picture of fish & submit
to Rick. Forms will be available at the monthly meetings
Legislative Issues
The MSSA plans to support the Freedom to Fish Act. This protects your right to fish and basically proposes the waters
of the state of Maryland shall not be closed to recreational fishing within reason. Please stand up and take notice as groups who
oppose fishing have closed areas in California and they are effectively shutting down parts of the ocean. More to come in the future.
MD - Rockfish Survey
Everyone make sure to record your data and submit it online the link is:
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries
This data will help us keep our allocation and provide accurate data on our catch. Otherwise we Will be subject
to what the scientist indicate. Please take the time to fill this out as I'm sure many of you fished on opening day. We will also
try to have the hard copy survey at the meeting.

NC Kingfish Trip
October 3 - 10, 2003
If you have not signed up yet you still have time. We will be faxing the forms to the Sundowner Motel in
Atlantic Beach after the March meeting. We have already received everyone's forms that went last year, let that assure you, it's
a great trip! No money is needed now; only a credit card # to hold the room - this is not charged until you show up.There is a discount
if you pay cash. There is a 3 week advance notice to cancel. The motel room's run around $380/week for a double, singles are available
& boat slips are free. It's the best week of fishing & fun anyone can expect. We catch King & Spanish Mackerel, small
Sharks, Sailfish, Red Drum, False Albacore, Baracuda, Cobia & Houndfish all while live baiting within sight of the beach. Even
catching small blues for bait while fast trolling is fun. Forget the treacherous inlets NC is famous for, Beaufort Inlet is wide
open & the fishing grounds just outside are well protected by the shoals. The fish tackle is very simple & beginners will
have no problem catching fish - in fact, first timers have won our tournament twice. If you have any questions please give Rob a
call at 301-696-7851 or 301-662-5360 (H).

Report from Bill's Fishing Shack By
Bill Johnson
Four couples from Frederick attended the MSSA Annual Convention on February 7-9. Charlie and Maureen Appleby,
Walt Shaw, Fred Keene and Bill Johnson represented the Frederick Chapter at the Saturday morning annual membership meeting. Part
of the meeting featured reports of projects sponsored by the MSSA. The guest speaker, Phil Simms from the Dept. of Natural Resources,
gave a PowerPoint presentation on the health of the Chesapeake Bay fisheries. According to his report, the rockfish, trout and hardhead
fishery of 2003 should be excellent. The Frederick Chapter made a donation to the MSSA Scholarship Fund of $1,000, which was reported
by Bill Hubbard as the largest donation made by a chapter in the history of the Fund. MSSA members from across the State enjoyed
socializing around the pool and in the Hospitality Room, which offered an endless buffet of favorite dishes brought by members and
their wives. The highlight of the weekend was the dinner dance on Saturday evening. The Frederick Chapter filled a table this year,
and everyone found their way to the dance floor at some time during the evening. (Walt and Florence can really cut a rug!) Trophies
were presented for the Bay captain of the year, blue water captain of the year and overall captain of the year. Note to wives
who hear the word "catch" and think it means a sales bargain: The Ocean City Outlets are open year round, and a detour
by the Bass Pro Shops on the way home provides the opportunity to shop at Arundel Mills Mall, boasting nearly 200 stores! Join
us next year for this off season gala, and help us fill two dinner tables. Time is growing short to make ready the rods,
reels and baits and to get the boat in shape for opening day. For tips on preparing your spring trolling rigs, feel free to contact
me or other chapter members. |
