Report from Bill's Fishing Shack by Bill Johnson
Overall, Bay fishing this past year wasn't bad, with nice catches of trout, hardhead, spot, small rockfish and only a few flounder.
But it was a real problem this year finding a day with winds less than 10-15 knots. It was one of the windiest years that I can
remember.
Then we went straight from a summer fishery to a winter rockfish fishery with the Bay water temperatures dropping into the lower
40s by mid-November. Air temperatures went from the 90s into the 40s virtually overnight. There just wasn't any fall. But I can't
complain, with rockfish up to 48" caught on my boat. It's my belief that the trout, on the other hand, took a non-stop flight
from the rivers south without schooling up for a snack on the way out of the Bay. Even if you could find some trout to jig on,
they would most likely be gone by the next day.
With the holidays behind us, it's time to start getting rods and reels, baits and tackle ready for Spring, with a little over
three months to the opening of the 2003 season.
Word from the Bay is that the gas dock will be closed to fishing from now on, with the Coast Guard enforcing the regulations.
This new legislative year coming up may be a challenge in that we have not only a new state governor, but a new DNR to work with.
If you have any concerns or questions or would like to attend any of the public hearings, feel free to call me at 301-663-4802.
We need your support.
Hope everyone had a great start to the New Year. Looking forward to seeing you at the dinner meeting in January.
On February 7-9, the MSSA Ocean City Convention will be held at the Princess Royal. We have a number of Frederick Chapter members
attending, including myself. There's plenty of food, fellowship and activities to be enjoyed by all. The MSSA Annual Membership
Meeting will be held on Saturday morning, when helpful information is shared about upcoming MSSA activities and legislative issues.
